Natalie Dmytrenko '14 and I are presentting on the sound alteration of Japanese numerals (4, 7, 9, & 10) and classifiers at AATJ in Toronto (March 15, 2012). This is a revised and expanded version of our presentation at MCAA at Macalester College last fall.

Yunxiang Dai '13 (Biology; Chemistry) and I were awarded for Magnus the Good Award (2011-12).

I have presented a paper with two students (Tanya Bovitz '14, and Laura Smith '12) at NWAV 40. It's based off of last year's ASIAN 240's class project!

My research is on sociolinguistic variation observed among Hmong Americans in the Twin Cities area. See the links!

ようこそ to Rika's homepage. (Last updated on 1/14/2012)

I am a sociolinguist who teaches Japanese, linguistics, and Asian studies courses in Asian Studies at St. Olaf College. During 2011-12, I am the interim Director of Linguistics Program. I also enjoy coordinating the Japanese language Program by incorporating CBI and mentoring students, including study abroad programs and international internships programs. Student-faculty research has been energizing me for the last several years.

We successfully completed our Japanese tenure-track search. Thank you very much for your interest in our position.

Natalie Dmytrenko '14 and I collected data for our project on sound alternation in numeral classifer in Japanese. Here's the overall results of the native speakers of Japanese who teach Japanese at the secondary or the post-secondary levels in north America. Thank you for those who participated in this study! We are currently collecting more data from college students from various parts of Japan! If you are a native speaker of Japanese and a college student in Japan, please participate in this study.
